ADS-B MANDATE

 

The FAA has mandated that the end of 2019 all US registered aircraft which operate in airspace that currently requires a Mode C or Mode S transponder, will need to be equipped with ADS-B “Out”. This includes Class A, B, or C airspaces, Class E airspace at and above 10,000 ft MSL. Approximately 120,000-140,000 GA Aircraft will need to be equipped with ADS-B Out Avionics. This comes out to 100 airplanes per day that will need to receive the upgrade. Will you be ready when the deadline hits?

What is ADS-B?

Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) is a precise satellite-based surveillance system that uses GPS technology to determine an aircraft’s location, airspeed and other data. ADS-B Out broadcasts that information to a network of ground stations, which relays the data to air traffic control displays and to nearby aircraft equipped to receive the data via ADS-B In.

What are the benefits of ADS-B?

Air traffic controllers will be able to reduce congestion, noise, emission and fuel consumption through more efficient routing and resource management. ADS-B also represents a leap forward in pilot situational awareness and will greatly enhance the safety of all those in the air by utilizing air traffic information.

Optional ADS-B “In” equipment allows aircraft to receive highly accurate traffic information directly from other aircraft and ADS-B signal corrections. They can also access graphical NEXRAD radar information, as well as METARs, TAFs and other subscription-free aviation weather information.
